If looking at these 3 books floods back nostalgic memories from your childhood, good or bad, then you understand the special power and meaning these childrens books can have. I was the kid who checked these books out of my school library more times than I can remember and when my mother saw the books on my nightstand as a 26 year old woman recently, she said, "Oh no, not those again." She was referring to the umpteenth times I would sneak into her room at night in the late 90's saying I was too scared to sleep by myself after reading the books. But even into my adulthood, the illustrations in the book by the wickedly good Stephen Gammell still haunt me - but in the best way.
I had always wanted to do a Scary Stories photo reanacment series (and luckily I can continue to do so as there are so many creepy images by the genius of Stephen Gammell) so what better time than for Halloween?
Below are 5 illustrations from the series I recreated with photography and computer magic. I included a video of my editing process because I was interested in the before and after of each image. Hope you enjoy and remember to keep it creepy!
